Life as a Fashion Student

As many of you may know, I am a fashion marketing student in Toronto and will be graduating soon! I believe that everyone should be doing something that they love, and following their dreams - whatever that may be! Mine was to get into the fashion industry, and my journey started way back at the age of 16 (in high school). For today though, I am going to be talking all about my education at Toronto Film School in the program Marketing for Fashion and Entertainment and what it's really like to study fashion. 

My School and Program

As mentioned above, I attend Toronto Film School for Marketing for Fashion and Entertainment. This is a fast-paced 18-month program that covers everything from Communications and Marketing - to Styling and Trend Forecasting. Each term (or semester) is three months long and it goes straight through the summer! We get one break week per term, as well as a couple weeks off in between each of the terms. 

This program has allowed me to try everything in the fashion industry and has provided me with various skills in each area to apply to everything I do in fashion whether it's my blog, my jewelry business, my internship, my sales associate position in a clothing store, or a future job in the industry. Toronto Film School has many hands-on type of classes and all teachers are industry professionals. They all have experience and lots of knowledge that they can relate to each of the course - and that makes it very interesting and relevant!

Projects I've done

One of my favourite things about school is all of the fun and creative projects I've been able to do! My favourite assignments are the ones that I feel took the longest, and were the hardest to accomplish - but I can look back and appreciate my hard work now!

Is fashion school hard?

I believe that fashion school - and the industry in general - is a lot of hard work and is made for someone with passion, creativity, determination, and self motivation. It is a fast-paced environment that can be very competitive and hard to be noticed. If you are serious about it, your hard work WILL pay off, though!

Is it worth it to go to school for fashion? 

I think that it depends on the person, but for me I saw it as very beneficial. I knew that I wanted to attend college or university, and that I loved fashion. I did a lot of research on different schools and career paths, and I was very determined that this was the right direction for me. I think that it was a great decision to attend school for fashion because you get to learn so many different aspects of the industry this way, and also get the opportunity to volunteer for various events and make lasting connections with teachers and students who are also in the industry.   

What are you going to do after you graduate?

My plan after graduation is to find a full-time job working in digital marketing or social media. Everything is digital these days, and there is a lot of opportunity in marketing online and advertising using social platforms. I love how this field connects everything I love and enjoy - fashion, writing, and photography.
