My Updated Skincare Routine For Oily Skin 2020

I believe my last skincare routine post was in 2018, so it's been a while since I covered a full analysis on my current go-to products. You guys asked for it, so here it is!

I’ve tried so many new products over the last year or so, and I have to admit - it’s hard to narrow down my absolute favourites. Even when it comes to my routine, I tend to switch products up from time to time, but I definitely have a system that seems to work in terms of the types of products.

Below, I will list my routine step by step for morning and night and give suggestions on my favourite product/brand for each step!

This is my morning routine:

1. Cleanser
2. Serum
3. Sunscreen
4. Moisturizer
5. Powder
6. Mist
7. Primer

This is my night routine:

1. Makeup remover
2. Cleanser
3. Exfoliator
4. Toner
5. Mask (x3 per week)
6. Eye serum
7. Serum
8. Moisturizer
9. Mist

For each product, here is what I use:

Cleanser

I love gel cleansers that slightly foam. My favourite at the moment is the NIU Body Amino Acid Cleanser. It does a great job at melting away any leftover makeup residue and leaving my skin feeling clean and refreshed. I feel like it really helps to keep my skin balanced and I’ve noticed a huge difference in the amount of acne I experience since I started using it months ago.

Serum

I like serums that are not too oily, and will soak into my skin nicely. I also like to go for serums that contain ingredients to help with redness, acne scars and blemish-prone skin. I’ve really enjoyed this CBD boosted by BYBI Beauty or this really nice Glow Serum by NIU Body.

SPF

This is a very important step in any skincare routine! For my oily skin, I am obsessed with Image Skincare and have even enjoyed an all natural zinc oxide formula by LASPA.

Moisturizer

I like a light moisturizer that doesn’t make my skin feel oily or greasy. I’m not a huge holy grail moisturizer person, but I know that it’s important to be adding moisture back into my skin, even though I do have oily skin. I have really enjoyed moisturizers by Saturday Skin, Monat and Laneige. All of these linked creams have been amazing for me and are oily skin approved!

Powder

This isn’t really a skincare item, but it’s a great step in my morning skin routine that helps control the shine and oil that my skin shows throughout the day. I use the Kat Von D Translucent Powder and dust it over my face concentrating on my forehead, nose, under eyes and chin.

Mist

I love a good refreshing mist. I feel like it really ties the routine together really nicely! I am really enjoying the Mario Beduscu mists right now. They have a perfect projection of mist, smell wonderful and leave my skin with a super enlightened feeling.

Primer

If you know me, then you already know that I'm in love with Evio Beauty and their primer is my favourite. It is non-greasy and helps my makeup stay in place all day! If you want to try Evio Beauty or Evio Skin, you can save 15% when you use code MIKAYLA15.

Makeup Remover

These wipes by Evio are the BEST I ave ever tried. They remove all of my makeup completely, even waterproof! They are super durable, can be washed and reused, and they are a travel essential. If you want to try Evio Beauty or Evio Skin, you can save 15% when you use code MIKAYLA15.

Exfoliation

One of my realizations over the years of taking care of my acne-prone skin is the importance of exfoliation. I literally need to have some kind of exfoliator in my routine, or else my skin will go crazy. I go back and forth between a drug store St. Ives scrub (more harsh), this Bliss Jelly Glow Peel (very gentle) or even this new Manuka Glow mask that I've been recently introduced to. It doubles as a mask and a cleansing exfoliator and can be done 3-4 times a week.

Toner

When I was younger, I used to us harsh toners that I believe were stripping away my skin and I have realized that its best to go for a more balancing / gentle toner. I have been loving the Monat Skin Revitalizing Essence. It's a light and fresh water-based hydrator, plus it also smells super yummy!

Face Mask

I work full-time for a face mask company, so how could I not mention masking?! I love a good clear based serum mask or clay based mask. I usually get my masks on 2-3 times a week. My favourites would be Detox Diva (great for oily/acne prone skin and great for balancing skin with a nice light hydration), Rosé All Day (perfect for reducing the appearance of pores and leaves skin feeling baby soft), Alya Skin Pink Clay (goes in for a pore-deep clean and make my skin feel so soft and clean, plus it's pink so of course I love it!).

Eye Serum

I want to ensure that my under eyes are always looking their brightest, so I've been recently loving this vitamin c serum by Kiehl's!
