What You Need to Know About Three Ships Beauty + Oily Skin POV Product Reviews

Three Ships Beauty is a Canadian (Toronto-based) skincare brand that offers a variety of natural, cruelty-free, vegan, pregnancy safe, allergy friendly and sustainably sourced products. They used to go by the name 'Niu Body' until they rebranded back in August 2020. 

The name 'Three Ships' is an interesting choice and there is a story behind it. Legend has it that the Fountain of Youth was discovered not by some impressive fleet, but just three ships. Myths aside, their products claim to prove that great discoveries can be made with limited resources. And that when you use simple, naturally-effective skincare, you won’t need a 12-step routine or convoy of complicated products.

Here's everything you need to know about the brand and their products:

Three Ships was founded in 2017 by a chemical engineer, Laura Burget, and a business grad, Connie Lo. Their goals was to solve the problems they faced as consumers. They were tired of being lied to and ripped off by overpriced, green-washed brands filled with unnecessary chemicals.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Laura and Connie for an article here. 

Three Ships' mission is to be the most transparent beauty brand in the world. And that's pretty cool. They have a whole glossary on their website that describes what each of their ingredients is and it's a very handy resource for any skincare lover, especially someone who wants to know what goes into Three Ships' products.

Three Ships describes that the term “natural” is an unregulated term. For Three Ships it means they only work with “plant/mineral raw ingredients that undergo chemical changes due to chemical and/or biological processes such as transesterification, fermentation, distilling etc.”

They do the research so you don't have to. Their natural skincare will forever be vegan, leaping bunny certified, cruelty-free, gluten-free and free of over 2,500 other toxic ingredients.

Now let's jump into their product line-up. This post will go through each of the items I've tried and have kept in my daily skincare routine.

Purify Cleanser

 I am in love with this cleanser! Ever since I found this cleanser back in 2020, I haven't traded it for anything else since. My oily skin loves it! I always make sure I have one in my shower and a back-up in my bathroom cupboard.

It makes my normally oily skin feel extra fresh and leaves the texture of my skin feeling smooth and matte (just how I like it). I love how it contains Aloe as well, which has amazing moisturizing benefits, so I know it won't dry out my skin. The key to oily skin is keeping it balanced - and this product really does help with that! This cleanser also contains salicylic acid, which combats and prevents blemishes (which I am used to getting all the time!).

Overall, it's a very gentle product and does it's cleansing job very well for my skin type.

Glow Serum

The Glow Serum is probably my favourite serum from Three Ships. 

It's a light-weight formula, highly-concentrated with jojoba oil, camellia seed oil is high in vitamins A, B, D and E. It claims to help minimize the appearance of pores and balances oily T-zones due to its nearly identical chemical structure to sebum (which is exactly what I need!). 

I have enjoyed using this serum immensely. Whenever I use this serum (even for a few days), I notice that my skin is brighter (less dull), clearer (less breakouts) and definitely brings out a glow in my complexion. Like, a literal glow! I totally understand where this serum gets its name from. 

Glow is an oil-based serum. I've read that the best way to fight oil build-up on the skin, is with oil! You can read more about my oil-based product discoveries for oily skin here.

Another bonus of this product: the blend of essential oils also makes this serum give a true sensory experience that relaxes me right away. I always include it in my bedtime skincare ritual!

Radiance Day Cream

I've used this moisturizer everyday since it was first released and I really like the "pump" packaging (you can see what I mean here) and I love how it makes my skin feel. It contains ingredients such as Grape Stem Cell Extract, Squalene and Prickly Pear Oil. These are all great anti-aging ingredients. I'm all for anti-aging and sun protection, however, this does not replace my regular SPF in my skincare routine. I lather that on after this moisturizer!

I prefer to use this moisturizer in the winter monthly when my normally oily skin is more on the combo/dry side. I like a lightweight gel-type moisturizer for the summer months, but I still really love this product.

Dream Night Cream

Dream is a night cream with a pillowy soft texture. I love the feeling of applying this each night before bed. It's formulated with a super gentle, plant-based retinol from Picão Preto – a medicinal herb that’s native to Brazil. Vegan squalane and seed butters like Shorea and Murumuru give this product a nice creamy texture that seals in moisture.

Buttercream Lip Balm

This lip product is amazing and I love how it smells like vanilla birthday cake. It reminds me a lot of the Glossier birthday cake balm dotcom scent.

I usually apply it in my makeup routine, before applying a drying lipstick, or I put it on before bedtime (usually in the winter months). I feel like it does an amazing job at replenishing some moisture to the lips, but I find that the feeling doesn't last long before I feel like I need to apply more. I still use it everyday, though! I've had the same pot for almost a year now and I'm still going through it. This product lasts a really long time and i's made with some awesome ingredients so I feel a bit better every time I go to use it.

Three Ships' Buttercream Lip Mask is made with actual buttercream, sunflower, coconut and avocado oil. Is there any moisturizing ingredient this lip mask doesn’t have?

Lip Scrub

This lip scrub is a life-saver, especially in the winter time! This scrub comes in handy. Fine sugar crystals slough off dry skin and plump up your lips, while natural shea butter and oils moisturize and soothe. This scrub has no artificial colours and is naturally flavoured.

This pot has lasted me 6+ months and I'm about halfway done. I've noticed it start to separate a bit and the scrub is a bit oily, but it still works great and tastes good, too!
