Skincare That Improved My Oily Skin Forever + Acne-Prone Skin Tips & Tricks

Oily skin used to be something I was very insecure about. I was always looking for a way to make my skin appear more matte, I had unwanted blemishes showing up left and right, and my skin never really felt clean, except for right after I washed it.

I have learned so much about taking care of my oily skin in the last 3-5 years and come to embrace all that oily skin has to offer, along with learning how to improve it.

Did you know that having oily skin also has its advantages?

Here are some pros of having oily skin:

- Oily skin stays moisturized longer
- Don't have to worry about dry/flaky skin
- Slows down the aging process
- Oily skin can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Natural oils can act as a barrier against environmental conditions such as wind, sun and air pollution

A big part of my oily skincare journey has been with Canadian Toronto-based brand, Three Ships Beauty. I have found all-natural, cruelty-free products from them that have improved my oily skin in so many ways and helped me manage it and embrace it. My skin's appearance, texture, and overall feel has changed dramatically since having Three Ships in my routine. Today on the blog I wanted to round up what my current favourite products are and why they are so beneficial to oily skin individuals like myself.

Purify Cleanser

I am in love with this cleanser! Ever since I found this cleanser back in 2020, I haven't traded it for anything else since. My oily skin loves it! I always make sure I have one in my shower and a back-up in my bathroom cupboard.

It makes my normally oily skin feel extra fresh and leaves the texture of my skin feeling smooth and matte (just how I like it). I love how it contains Aloe as well, which has amazing moisturizing benefits, so I know it won't dry out my skin. The key to oily skin is keeping it balanced - and this product really does help with that! This cleanser also contains salicylic acid, which combats and prevents blemishes (which I am used to getting all the time!).

I use this cleanser in all seasons here in Canada (Toronto) - summer, winter, spring, and fall!

Overall, it's a very gentle product and does it's cleansing job very well for my skin type.

Glow Serum

The Glow Serum is probably my favourite serum from Three Ships.

It's a lightweight formula, highly concentrated with jojoba oil, camellia seed oil is high in vitamins A, B, D, and E. It claims to help minimize the appearance of pores and balances oily T-zones due to its nearly identical chemical structure to sebum (which is exactly what I need!).

I have enjoyed using this serum immensely. Whenever I use it, I notice that my skin is brighter (less dull), and clearer (fewer breakouts), and definitely brings out a glow in my complexion. Like, a literal glow! I totally understand where this serum gets its name from.

Calm Lavender Hydrosol Toner

This all-natural toner is in a spray format, which is a super refreshing applicator. It contains Lavender hydrosol water which is an alcohol-free tonic that penetrates deeply, evening out skin tone. This tonic also contains witch hazel and aloe vera to soothe skin and minimize the appearance of pores.

The scent is beyond satisfying and the feeling of the mist on my skin is very rejuvenating. My skin always feels very fresh after using it and I love how it seems to really calm my skin. I noticed my skin tone and redness dull down after only a few uses, and I can appreciate how it also helps to keep my pore size at a minimum.

Superfruit Lactic + Multifruit 8% AHA Exfoliating Mask

This gentle exfoliating mask brings instant results and also feels amazing. I know my oily skin is getting a workout each time I use this.

Superfruit is for all skin types, but I love how balanced it makes my oily skin feel. Superfruit's exfoliating rice powders polish the skin's surface while fruit-based AHAs brighten and remove dead skin cells. Lactic and fruit acids gently resurface and renew dull and congested skin, while aloe vera soothes and hydrates.

I apply a thin, even layer to a clean, wet face about 2-3 times a week. Massage using small, circular motions until your entire face is covered in a thin even layer – steering clear of the skin around your eyes and mouth. Leave on for up to 5 minutes, or up to 2 minutes for sensitive skin. Rinse and pat dry. Your skin might tingle and flush slightly for a moment – that’s the active ingredients doing their thing!
